Measure the rice you actually cook

Rice variety, cooking method and the amount of retained water can affect cooked yield. Treat a default factor as an initial estimate. To establish your own factor, weigh the uncooked rice and then weigh the cooked plain rice after your normal finishing step, before adding other ingredients. Keep the preparation consistent between tests.

Calculate the ratio from the two masses

If 100 grams uncooked produces 280 grams cooked, the measured factor is 2.8. At that factor, 250 grams uncooked would be estimated to produce 700 grams cooked. Use the same weight unit for both measurements. Do not divide a cooked weight in grams by an uncooked volume in cups and label the resulting number a weight-yield factor.

Store the method with the number

Record rice variety, brand, batch size, cooking approach and how you finished the batch before weighing it. A factor measured from one method need not transfer to another. If a later batch produces a different result, recheck the preparation rather than forcing the old factor to fit. This yield calculation also does not specify cooking-water quantity; follow the rice package or tested cooking method for that separate instruction.
