Measure a representative cup

Use the same cup standard and preparation method that the recipe expects. Tare a bowl, fill one cup, level or pack it only as directed, and transfer the ingredient into the bowl. Record the weight in grams. If the ingredient is chopped, grated or sifted, keep that preparation consistent between your measurement and the recipe.

Repeat before choosing a value

One scoop can be unrepresentative. Measure several separate cups, record their weights, and calculate their average. Note the range too: large differences indicate that the measuring technique needs more consistency. You can enter the average grams per cup into the converter, but do not mistake an average for a guarantee about every future scoop.

Use the result within its scope

For three cups at 150 grams per cup, the total is 450 grams, or about 0.9921 pounds. That result belongs to the measured ingredient and method. Recheck after changing the ingredient form or cup size. For precise baking, using the target mass directly usually avoids the uncertainty involved in transferring a measured volume into a weight calculation.
