Find square yards from dimensions or a known area, compare price-per-area quotes, and separate net area from a chosen purchasing allowance.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose dimensions or a known area as the starting point.
  2. Enter measurements in the selected units, then any explicit purchasing allowance.
  3. Enter an optional quote and choose its actual area-price basis. Changing a price basis reinterprets that quoted number; match the supplier’s quote.
  4. Select Calculate. Compare net area, allowance area and the normalised price. Plan roll cuts separately.

Formula and unit basis

Square yards = length(ft) × width(ft) ÷ 9, or known area(ft²) ÷ 9. One yd² equals exactly 9 ft² and 0.83612736 m². Cost uses the area expressed in the selected price unit.

Worked examples

A 12 ft × 15 ft rectangle contains 180 ft², or 20 yd². A quote of 3 per ft² is equivalent to 27 per yd² and gives the same net-area material cost of 540.

Assumptions and interpretation

A square yard is area; a linear yard from a roll is length at a specified width. Net area and a percentage allowance do not create a cutting layout, account for pile direction or guarantee enough roll goods. Use a supplier-approved layout for actual roll orders.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide square feet by nine?

A square yard is a square three feet on each side, so it contains 3 × 3 = 9 square feet.

Can I compare quotes per square foot and square yard?

Yes. Select the quoted price basis so cost is calculated from the matching area unit.

Is net square yardage enough for a carpet order?

Not necessarily. Roll width, cutting direction, seams and pattern repeats can change the purchased quantity.
