Compare square-yard and square-foot quotes by converting the price basis before comparing totals. One square yard contains nine square feet, so a price per square foot is multiplied by nine to express the equivalent price per square yard. The area conversion runs in the opposite direction: square feet are divided by nine.
Keep area conversion and price conversion separate
A 12-foot by 15-foot room has area 180 square feet, or 20 square yards. The Square Yards Calculator can start from those dimensions or from a checked area. Select the unit in which the supplier quoted the price; the tool normalises it and computes cost using the matching area unit.
The two calculations preserve the same total. If the price is 3 per square foot, 180 × 3 = 540. The equivalent price is 27 per square yard, and 20 × 27 = 540. A ninefold discrepancy usually indicates that an area in one unit was multiplied by a price in the other.
Compare two quotes on the same measured floor
| Quote | Quoted price | Equivalent price per yd² | Cost for 180 ft² / 20 yd² |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 27 per yd² | 27 | 540 |
| B | 3.10 per ft² | 27.90 | 558 |
On these stated material-price assumptions, B costs 18 currency units more for the same net area. That does not yet compare delivery, installation, accessories or tax. It also does not establish that the suppliers are quoting the same product or the same purchase quantity.
Check what area the quote is charging for
A seller may price measured floor area, a quantity including a stated allowance, or actual roll material cut to length. Ask which one appears on the quote. A lower price applied to more purchased material can exceed a higher price applied to a smaller order.
For illustration, a 10% allowance on 20 square yards gives 22 square yards. At 27 per square yard, that scenario costs 594. The 10% is an example input, not a general recommendation. The calculator keeps the net 20-square-yard result alongside the allowance quantity so the basis can be checked.
Do not confuse square yards and linear yards
A linear yard is a length of three feet. The area obtained from a linear yard of roll material depends on the roll width. A roll 12 feet wide provides 12 × 3 = 36 square feet, or four square yards, for each linear yard of length. A roll of another width produces a different area.
A quote of 40 per linear yard for that hypothetical 12-foot-wide roll is equivalent to 10 per square yard before cutting losses. Treating 40 as a square-yard price would misrepresent the quote by a factor of four. Confirm whether the supplier uses a length or area unit before entering a price into an area-based calculator.
Bring metric quotes onto the same basis
One square yard equals exactly 0.83612736 square meter. A price per square meter is multiplied by 0.83612736 to produce an equivalent price per square yard. Alternatively, convert the floor area to square meters and apply the original metric price. Both routes should agree apart from display rounding.
Retain the original unit and quote value on the worksheet. Replacing the source value with a rounded converted value can make a later invoice harder to reconcile, particularly when the final purchase is rounded into packs or roll increments.
Ask for a comparable quote breakdown
- Product, grade and any relevant batch or finish information.
- Measured net area and the actual quantity being sold.
- Price unit: ft², yd², m² or a linear roll unit.
- Allowance or cutting-layout basis.
- Separate charges and the supplier's selling increment.
Use the roll-layout guide to understand why the ordered area can exceed the net floor. For an irregular footprint, establish the geometry first with the Square Footage Calculator; a price conversion should not introduce a new measurement of the same room.

Frequently asked questions
How is a price per square foot converted to a price per square yard?
Multiply the price by nine; the equivalent area changes in the opposite direction.
Can a linear-yard quote be entered as a square-yard price?
No. Convert it using the specified roll width first, or use the supplier’s area-based quotation.
