Cat years, human-age comparison and life stage

Enter your cat’s chronological age in years to see an approximate human-age comparison and a separate chronological life-stage label. The tool covers cats aged 1–25 years; it deliberately excludes kitten-age interpolation.

Read how cat human-age comparisons differ from life stages for examples and guidance on uncertain birthdays. The Dog Age Calculator uses different methods; the two species do not share one conversion rule.

Age-comparison method

The first reference point is approximately 15 human years at cat age one. At age two, the comparison is 24. Each subsequent year adds four: 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2). Between ages one and two, decimal values are interpolated between 15 and 24.

A five-year-old cat gives 36 human-equivalent years; a ten-year-old gives 56. These are educational comparisons, not measured biological ages or estimates of the years a cat has left.

Life-stage labels

Chronological age used by this toolDisplayed life stage
At least 1 and below 7Young adult
7 through 10Mature adult
Greater than 10Senior

The age bands follow the AAHA/AAFP feline framework. Their purpose is to organize discussion around chronological life stage. They are not obtained by assigning a human life-stage label to the converted number.

Entering partial years

Use years plus months divided by 12. For example, six years and three months is 6.25 years. If an adoption record gives an approximate age, explore the plausible inputs rather than treating one decimal result as a precise birthday.

The calculator does not adjust its arithmetic for lifestyle or medical history. Discuss changes in health or behavior with a veterinarian rather than relying on an age-equivalent number.

Frequently asked questions

Is one cat year always seven human years?

No. This tool uses about 15 at age one, 24 at age two, and four additional human-equivalent years for each later cat year.

Does the human-age number determine life stage?

No. The displayed life stage is based on actual cat age. It is kept separate from the human-equivalent comparison.

Can I enter a kitten’s age?

This tool covers ages 1–25 years. It does not extend the adult comparison into kitten ages.
