Original instructional diagram for Count-Based Mutation Rates: Define Independent Events and the Denominator. Values, when shown, are illustrative; clinical images do not recommend a dose.
Define the opportunity unit
A rate per cell division is not numerically interchangeable with a rate per site transmission or per locus transmission. Write down what constitutes one opportunity and which events count in the numerator. The displayed unit follows that choice.
Use Mutation Rate Calculator to work through these inputs while keeping the displayed assumptions in view.
Do not count descendants as independent events
Endpoint mutant colonies do not automatically identify independent mutations. This tool needs a justified event count; it does not perform fluctuation-analysis inference. If the study design requires such an estimator, a simple events-over-opportunities ratio answers a different question.
This question belongs to the Genetics calculators group within Biology calculators.
Read the calculation on its stated basis
Count-based rate estimate = independent mutation events ÷ mutation opportunities on the selected basis.
This does not implement a fluctuation-analysis estimator or infer independent events from endpoint colonies.
Retain the input definitions and units with the result. A later comparison should use the same basis; a change in method is a new scenario, not simply a more precise version of the old number.
Keep related questions separate
Mutation Frequency Calculator addresses a related part of the measurement or interpretation task. Check its own method before carrying a value from one tool to the other.
For a related perspective, read Mutant Frequency Is an Endpoint Observation, Not a Mutation Rate.
For tools in other subjects, return to GreenCalc. Keep the calculator result with its assumptions rather than using a link or a matching unit as evidence that two models are interchangeable.
